Help selecting a iPhone SE mount for use in 2013 Honda Fit LX

I'm all ready to start using my new iPhone SE's Apple Maps turn-by-turn voice navigation. I thought it would be straightforward to choose a car mount, but as it turns out, there are countless options. And I can only see them online.

I've narrowed them down to ten. It's a large number, but I've already done ruthless vetting. It must be suction anchored, not anchored to the CD slot, cigarette lighter, or cup holder. I wanted the stability of suction, and didn't want the mount to obscure manual access to the dashboard controls. I also didn't want the air vents to be blocked, or the cup holder to be monopolized by the mount.

The only thing I have to live with is the fact a mount taking up space on top of the dashboard or on the windshield, which obstructs my use of a reflector that I place against the windshield to keep the sun out. So being able to quickly remove the mount *might* be good, but removing the mount means that the suction surface will pick up dust, unless I want to wash and air dry it *every* time I remove it (which boils down to every time that I park). I think I will have to figure out a way to make that work after acquiring the mount.

I basically looked at amazon.ca for candidates with the above features, and having 4 stars and up. The "short" list of my candidates for are listed below. At this point reading the reviews isn't all that helpful because each candidate will have a variety of positive and negative comments. I'm hoping to get targeted anecdotes -- I am specifically mounting an iPhone SE, Apple's smallest phone -- (4.9"h, 2.3"w, 0.3"d) and I am mounting it in a 2013 Hond Fit LX. Pictures of the dashboard can be found at:

Can those who have gone through this search and now own a car holder please chime in either about my criteria/consideratoins or about the specific candidates? Thanks.

I have a 2008 Fit Sport and, because the dash is not truly smooth (except in the locations where I absolutely positively do not want my phone), suction cup mounts wouldn't work at all. Everything would appear to be perfect for a week or so and then I'd hit a bump and my phone and mount would be on the floor.

This mount has been perfect. I use the sticky-back option. It's mounted on the dash to the left of the instrument panel and the only thing that it blocks is the windshield pillar.

Found this previous thread on phone mounts for the Fit: http://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-generation-ge-08-13/79055-cell-phone-mount.ht ml.

I'm intrigued by the Aduro U-Grip Plus Universal Suction Cup Mount mentioned in that thread, for which a better review is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ToL7J2DrO4. It works well even on textured dashboard surfaces. It was shown to work with the narrow iPhone 4s, which is almost identical in width to my iPhone SE. You can clean the suction cup surface when the suction degrades due to dust/lint. It isn't magnetic, which posed concerns for me, and it isn't vent-mounted, thus incurring the risk of heating the phone & battery in the winter time.

I have the option of mounting on the windshield if I wish (though I'm leaning toward the dashboard surface, for the sake of visibility). It's not mounted on the cupholder, so I don't monopolize my cupholder, and it's not mounted on the 12V power outlet, which is quite low down on the 2013 Fit LX. It's cheap, so if it doesn't work out, oh well. My only decision now is whether to acquire one now, for standby availability, or getting one just-in-time (when I anticipate a trip).

Thanks, Philly. Your dash surface looks more textured than mine, with the overt stippling on the surface. So my success rate with a suction cup may be better, but still, your tale of losing adhesion in about a week's time is something I'm heeding. The sticky-back that you're using -- is it meant to permit the phone holder to be removed on a regular basis?

No, not really. The second time that I put it on, it didn't hold well. I went to the local Home Depot and bought a roll of double-sided foam tape. Now, whenever I want to remove it (which is rare), I simply cut a small length of tape.

I'm trying to picture your routine when you have to remove the mount. I guess you rip it off, then scrape/peel off the double-sided tape? Does it leave a residue on the dashed and/or underside of the mount? Does it build up as you repeat the routine?

After hearing positive accounts of permanent mounts from you and others, I researched it a bit more. One potential concern is that the presence of mounts tends to attract the attention of thieves. Even with a suction mount, you have to remove evidence of the mount when you remove the mount. If thieves see signs that you use a mount, they are likely to break in to find the phone or GPS unit.

Sigh....hooda thunk that a simple phone mount could involve so many considerations.

Sep 5, 2017 5:56 AM in response to Philly_Phan

That's what I assumed until I read up a bit. Apparently, no. And I'm *assuming* that they are looking for dedicated GPS navigation aids when they break into a car with a mount. They find it in the glove compartment (or somewhere) often enough that they are still incentiviized by the sign of a mount. Even indications of a mount is enough, e.g., a mark left on the glass by a suction mount. I'm also assuming that the reason why dedicated GPS navigation devices are still of any value is because phones are risky, as people can remotely access them and ore even track them to find the thief.

Thanks for letting me know about the fact that the double-sided tape leaves no residue. I'm surprised at this, considering the sometimes hot temperatures within a car. The solution will require i need to keep a roll of double sided tape in the car if I'm routinely removing the mount. Since you don't see tape residue, I am hoping that this means that the sometimes high temperatures within the car won't make a mess of the tape roll over the long term.

I gotta say that removing the tape as often as you're suggesting would be a major PIA. When I park my car, all I want to do is leave it except that I grab whatever items are important to me like my iPhone and my glasses.

My I politely suggest that you shouldn't be so paranoid.

By the way, my Fit is in the shop right now with its first serious problem. The alarm triggers at random times for no valid reason. They can't find a cause so I suggested disabling it. Who's going to steal a ten-year old Fit? Well, so far they can't figure out how to disable it without also requiring locking/unlocking doors only via the buttons and manual key insertion.

Sep 5, 2017 7:40 PM in response to Philly_Phan

I'm not being paranoid. I'm doing research and coming across a common issue in more than just an isolated webpage. The issue isn't that phones typically are left in the car, as that typically doesn't happen. The problem is that thieves see a mount and will break in to search for a dedicated GPS navigation device, which typically is *not* taken out of the car. Even if they find that there is nothing to steal, you have the pain of repairing your car. They may not be after your fit, but they can do a lot of damage searching for something that isn't there.

Thanks for clarifying the level of inconvenience with removing the double sided tape. I think I'll go with suction. If I'm not going the leave the phone holder mounted on the dash, then it won't be mounted long enough to lose significant suction. That seems to be the most logical solution, given my expected usage pattern.
