Library size

Hi. I'm trying to get to the bottom of why my 'other' storage is so large on my mac, when I have a relatively small amount of files on it.

When I search my library and select all files, the total size is 33gb. However when I look at the individual files within this folder they come to no where near 33gb. Are there hidden files within my library which are taking up huge amounts of space?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Please detail for us exactly how you go about doing this.

Or instead, find out the true size of your library folder this way:

  • Open Finder. Use the Menu to go to View > Show View Options. Check "Show Library Folder".
  • Open Finder again. Control-click the Library folder. Choose "Get Info".
  • See the size of the folder this way.

I clicked cmd A to select all files, then clicked on 'file' and 'get info'. When you click on the individual files and click info, the total is no where near 33gb.

When I click on 'About this mac' other is 42gb. Why so high when I have hardly any files on it and it's only around a year old?? Oddly when I deleted Spotify as it was a large file (around 300mb), other went up not down?!

Frustrating as I feel half my storage has gone already limiting what photos I'm able to upload to it.
