Can Fusion drives be upgraded to APFS?

"Systems with ... Fusion drives won't be converted to APFS." Fusion drives won't be, but can they be converted to APFS?

"You can't opt-out of the transition to APFS." Does this mean Macs with Fusion drives cannot be upgraded to High Sierra? Put another way, is APFS a requirement for High Sierra?

Mac mini (Late 2014), macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Does "all" also include external spinning drives, as far as you know?

Consider the context of rbbicknell's question. I think your question is somewhat different. An answer can be found in the following https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/FileManagement/Concept ual/APFS_Guide/FAQ/FAQ.html#//apple_ref/…:

Can I use Apple File System with my existing hard disk drive?

Yes. Apple File System is optimized for Flash/SSD storage, but can also be used with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) and external, direct-attached storage.

In the context of your question, I interpret that as a "yes". I think it goes without saying the external storage devices would need to be coreStorage compliant.

Also, read https://developer.apple.com/library/content/releasenotes/MacOSX/WhatsNewInOSX/Ar ticles/macOS_10_13_0.html#//apple_ref/do….

I seriously doubt that will be the case, but we can only be certain when HS is finally released.

I don't interpret that Support document excerpt to conclude it's a requirement, and in fact it won't even be an option for Fusion drives.

When you upgrade to macOS High Sierra, systems with all flash storage configurations are converted automatically.

I believe the operative word there is all.

If they could be converted, there is no reason they would not be converted. Whether this is permanent is currently unknown.

The full sentence is:

When you upgrade to macOS High Sierra, systems with all flash storage configurations are converted automatically. Systems with hard disk drives (HDD) and Fusion drives won't be converted to APFS.

Which implies that you can upgrade HDD and Fusion drives to HS. The rest of the paragraph applies to SSD-only systems. So, no, APFS isn't a requirement.

I'm replying to myself here. This, from the Apple developer faq re APFS, indicates that it is compatible with external HDDs, (and I am assuming that, if the drives are mounted at the time of the upgrade, they will be converted to APFS.)
