If the phone is only 8 months old and the screen is cracked is that covered under the warranty and in light of that she may have other damage. Such as half the screen is dark.

I believe its 2 incidents, but its not free, there's still a fee that needs to be paid. The Apple Care+ fee is much lower than the regular out of warranty fee however.

No. Accidental damage is not covered under warranty.
Phil is correct for the standard warranty, but if she purchased AppleCare for it then I think one incident may be covered. Phil will certainly verify if I'm correct.
