Why did my text messages stop showing up on my iPad.

Hi. Your iPad cannot by itself send or receive SMS. You need to relay them through an iPhone using Continuity. See this link: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support.
