My Apple TV is working, I also have a working Apple TV physical remote. My wife's iPhone remote app works because she denied the offered app update. However I updated it on my iPhone, now it only works for displaying current song playing.
Question: How can I or where can I install a working iPhone Apple TV remote app for a 1st gen AppleTV. I have removed and reinstalled the app. What is available on AppStore doesn't work?

The new Apple TV Remote app is not compatible with the 1st generation Apple TVs.

If you and your wife share the same iTunes on your computer, get her app synced to iTunes (“transfer purchases”), then you can sync it from iTunes to your phone.
Make sure you are using the new Apple TV remote app. The original one was rebranded and is now only for controlling iTunes
It definitely is. It still works on my wife's iPhone it's just she didn't update hers.
