Why is the transfer speed so low for iTunes data backups?

Hi folks,

Quick question: I have the state of the art hardware from Apple. A 2017 15" Macbook pro maxed out and an iPhone 7. Duing the backup process of the iPhone onto the MBP, through a USB-C to Lighting cable, I saw speeds that maxed to 40MB/s or so.

Considering that the flash of both the Mac, and the iPhone are much faster than that, why is the copy speed so low, even considering the overhead and stuff like that?

AFAIK, iDevices connect over USB 2 speeds. Only the 12.9” iPad Pro could use USB 3.

You might actually get faster iTunes backup speeds using Wi-Fi than cable.
