I can't hear well, like there is hardly any volume when speaking and listening into phone

I can't hear anyone very well at all through my phone. I either have to use speaker or run the aux cord into my car stereo to hear anyone. My ringer button is turned on, the volume buttons are at highest level, I've seen the volume indicator max out and still I can barely hear through my phone? Can someone please help?
