Audio interfaces and garage band

Very new to the world of digital recording. If I use a 2 in-2 out or 4 in-4 out USB audio interface, does that mean that I can record 2 or 4 tracks simultaneously and have them show up as individual tracks in Garageband and can I do so just via the USB interface? I hope that makes sense. I am using a Mac Book Pro, if that matters. Thanks.
