I cannot delete some photos on my iPad. How can I delete them?

I wanted to delete some the photos on my iPad because it is taking a lot of space and most of them are already synced into my computer. But I don't see trash can icon on a lot of the photos and cannot erase them. How can I erase them? I think at one time, I may have synced the photos back to the iPad and had duplicate photo of all the photos and I erased all the duplicates. Does that have anything to do with it?

If the photos were synced from a computer (they are not in the Camera Roll album ?) you can't delete them directly on the iPad, you need to reconnect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and use the Photos tab in iTunes to de-select their albums and re-sync : Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all of your devices - Apple Support

If you don't want the synced photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch anymore, turn off syncing in iTunes and they'll be removed from your device. You can turn off syncing for some of your photo albums or all of them at once.

Stop syncing some albums

  1. Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click on the device icon in iTunes.
  3. Click Photos.
  4. Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections that you want to stop syncing.
  5. Click Apply.

Stop syncing all photos

  1. Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click on the device icon in iTunes.
  3. Click Photos.
  4. Deselect "Sync Photos" then click "Remove photos."
  5. Click Apply.
