I was lost following the various solutions suggested in the streams I read here. I simply went to Finder / Applications and drug the programs to the Trash. This solved my problems.

It really did not. Those applications can't be completely removed by simply dragging them to the Trash. They put so much stuff through out your system that the only way rally get rid of them is with the uninstall procedure written by the developer. You not have bits and pieces of them set in your system. Eventually they will cause problems on your Mac.
Allan, it really did. And, this is how megabackup.com/uninstall says to do it:
To uninstall MegaBackup on Mac:
1Quit the program.
2Open your Applications folder.
3Find the MegaBackup icon and drag it to the Trash.
4For security reasons, you will be asked to enter your Mac user password.
5Empty Trash to completely remove MegaBackup
