Airpods sound different on iPhone than iPad?

I have noticed that the quality of the sound through iPhone has some static especially at high volumes. I am assuming that it is due to signal strength and that the Bluetooth inside the iPhone isn't quality.

On the iPad Pro, these AirPods certainly live up to its price and perfect non scruffy music. It's sound so much better.

Has anyone noticed this??
