Airplay dropping after ~2 minutes

Recently, airplay from my iOS devices to an apple tv ha s started dropping after about 2 minutes of play time. It happens with both youtube and vimeo and both my phone and my wife's phone. My setup is:

Apple TV 4th gen w/ tvOS 10.2.2

iPhones with 10.3.3

Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X 1.9.7 hotfix 2 (also tried 1.9.1.1 with same results)

2x Ubiquiti Unifi AC Pro

2x LinkSys LGS116P switch

It doesn't happen 100% of the time but once it starts happening, it happens quite consistently (which makes it easier to try different things). I've tried rebooting the router, the APs, the phones, the apple tv, and the switches without any improvement. I've also tried removing one of the APs but that didn't help either. I've captured packets on the ERX when it happens and it looks like a the apple tv sends up a bunch of resets (see attached, 10.0.1.77 is the apple tv)?

It doesn't happen when playing videos directly from the apple tv, only when airplaying from a phone to the apple tv. It's definitely annoying and it didn't happen a month or two ago.

Has anyone else experienced airplay dropping after about 2 minutes before? Any suggestions on what I can try?

thanks!

Dear All,

I think there is more than one problem in play in these discussions. If you are having the consistent drop after 2 minutes when using video, it may be the same problem I was having. This problem was COMPLETELY SOLVED by initiating AirPlay in a different way. I had been initiating it with mirroring, which used to work. That doesn’t work in iOS 11, it drops after 2 minutes of video play. But initiating it in either of the other two ways works fine. Best is from the audio widget in the control panel. For details, see the other posts about this earlier in this thread.

However, I had issues on an iPhone 8 with ios11, and none on an iPhone 5 with iOS10. I’ve noticed that the fix is to not press the airplay mirroring button - but to use alternative methods to turning airplay on, e.g from the little tv- symbol next to the play button on a movie or from the music widget (that has AirPlay options for audio out, and streams video as well from there).

Okay.. with the latests update to IOS, 11.2, on my iphone X, my airplay issue seems to be have fixed. I can now airplay directly to my AppleTV (addhoc, no network connectivity for the appletv) without it dropping every 2 minutes 40 seconds...

There wasn't any mention of the 'fix' in the release notes of 11.2, but it's working for me.

I hope this newest updated fixes this same type of issue for everyone on IOS 11..

Can somebody confirm if trying to stream with no WiFi works as well? I bought the Apple TV because I travel and needed a device to “screen mirror” the iPhone. When I try to screen mirror, only certain apps work, others say playing on Apple TV but I get a black loading screen and then an error. Does this means it’s looking for WiFi? If so, what’s the point of mirroring with no WiFi? Thanks for the reply in advance.

I can verify that mine now works (again) with 11.2 on my iPhone and my second gen AppleTV in my car, where there is no common network. You must have WiFi and Bluetooth on but the two devices do NOT need to be on the same wired/wireless network. As long as you have them both turned on and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, you can airplay from your iOS/MacOS device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac/MacBook) to the AppleTV. I’ve airplayed from within the TV app as well as used the Control Center Mirroring feature with success. It’s somewhat magical.

But Apple TV has to be connected to a network? Or can you do peer to peer and airplay just using the iPhones data? Because when I try to airplay a safari video without WiFi, it goes to a black loading screen and never plays. I bought the ATV thinking I would screen mirror everything without the need of WiFi just like the Microsoft wireless adapter.

HI, thanks for your reply. There are only certain apps that do that when on screen mirror mode. FXX, FOX Now, Comedy Central, and other apps play great and still show what is on then phone to the big screen. But other apps such as TBS and ABC go to the black screen.

They should have an option to select which airplay one prefers because I certainly prefer screen mirror since I would connect without WiFi at times. Hopefully in an update we will see this very soon.
