I know I have to connect the Magic Mouse to my Mac to pair it, but for charging purposes, does it always have to be connected to my Mac for charging or can I use my power outlet with the lightning cable to charge it?

Charge it from the machine. It is a two and a half hour job for a full charge from a near zero start. But a three minute job for a couple of average days work. Make sure the device is switched on.
