I typically upgrade my MacBook every 6 years but depending on how much you use your MacBook and how you use it, it will vary. These are my recommendations:
If you use it for email and web browsing, you should upgrade every about 10 or so years.
If you use it for word processing and light tasks, you should upgrade every about 6 years.
If you use it for work/business or intensive tasks (gaming, video editing, etc.), you should upgrade every about 2 years.

Apple does not make such information free to the public. When you say, "average life," exactly what does that mean? If the interpretation is the amount of time the original owner keeps it before replacing it with something newer then I'd say 3 years.
What is the reasoning behind these options? I can think of any number of things that would obviate your averages. Furthermore, there has been no criteria set for determining averages nor any evidentiary data. Even my time was a mere guess. The new model cycle may be 3 years or less.
No idea what the average is but of mine the oldest is a 2008 model which still works fine.
