iPad email

My new iPad downloads old, deleted email by the thousands. When it downloads I delete them and then it downloads them again. I can't stop them. I have a laptop, which I don't use anymore, but if I open that up it downloads thousands of old email too. How to I stop deleted emails from downloading again?
