What to do about LibreOffice databases

I just migrated from Windows10 Creator to an IMac with Sierra. I was told that LibreOffice would work. It doesn't. The word processor prints everything landscape (but I can export each odb document to a pdf file which will print portrait; annoying for sure but do-able.) The biggest problem, however is that because there is no more jre or jdk, my database files are completely useless.

I've tried Codeweavers Crossover (doesn't open anything including the version of LibreOffice it is bundled with); RazorSql which is supposed to open odb files but I surely couldn't make head nor tales of how.

I've submitted bug files to LibreOffice but it seems this is more an Apple issue. Is anyone working on this? I have a database of a hundred pages that is over 10 years old. Luckily I did export a pdf report of its contents but I need this database and no longer can maintain it.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Apple leadership and product teams do not read or participate in these public, user-to-user support communities, and no, Apple is not working on Java support.

See Eric Root's, or Barney-15E's contributions here for links to either a Java 6, or Java 8 runtime (JRE) respectively.

Apple stopped supporting Java years ago, and refers those that need Java functionality in their applications (where it is not restricted by the application developer to Java 6), to get the Java 8 runtime (JRE) from Oracle. LibreOffice (currently 5.4.1.2) has certain features that require Java runtime installation, and among those is the Base database. Once Java is installed, one visits the LibreOffice Preferences : Advanced, and select Use a Java runtime environment.

You should contact LibreOffice support or their community forum. There are going to be vastly more LibreOffice users on their support site than are here. I doubt Java will have any effect on the Landscape/Portrait issue. Sounds more like a bug in the LibreOffice program itself.

You might also try installing Apple's Java 6 (and possibly just use that), along with Oracle's Java 8 JDK.

LibreOffice may depend on Apple's various Java helper apps which are not installed by default anymore. I don't know if the Oracle JDK installs those helper functions.

Hello Ambimom,

LibreOffice is often touted as a replacement for Microsoft Office. To make a long story short, it isn't. To make the story even more painful, some parts of LibreOffice require Java, which is a big can-o-worms.

What you have to do is install the current Oracle JDK. It may work then. See this post from the LibreOffice community forums: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/64335/libreoffice-base-51-for-mac-java-r untime-issues/

Databases for end users have always been a problem. Microsoft Access is not part of Microsoft Office for the Mac. I'm afraid you are on your own to find a new database and figure out how to import your data. If you can get the database in LibreOffice working, I suggest you explore what export formats it supports and then look for web-based or native Mac databases that can import those formats. I can't recommend any. I used developer-oriented databases.

I did install the latest jdk from Oracle. It installed and was visible to LibreOffice but it did not open the LibreOffice odb database files (nor did it fix the fact that it only printed landscape not portrait.) I then tried to install the latest java runtime environment from Oracle. It installed but the jre link was not visible to LibreOffice even after typing in the direct link according to the Java Runtime console.

This is maddening.....
