Unable to verify account name or password in Mail OSX Sierra

It started happening when trying to install a new email account on various Macs to in iPads.

I keep getting the same message again and again: "unable to verify account name or password".

on MAcbook Pro Retina 2012 and iMac 27" 2011.

It is a godaddy account I am trying to get to work and webmail works fine, plus it works fine on one Macbook and 2 iPads. It is a bug I assume, since I find others reporting on it over a few years now. But no real solution offered that worked, tried most of them.

It appeared also on the Macbook on which the email account works but all of a sudden the error message was gone.

Apple is there a resolution for this issue ? I assume it has something to do with the cumbersome Keychain

application but I do not want to reset the Keychain. Please help thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Hi again, There is no 4 digit code, I do not have one and never got one 🙂

However I did the below as I had suggested before from the iMac as the good keychain and then after that reset the passwords for remaining two Godaddy accounts but not through the Godaddy admin control panel but from webmail window and clicking "forgot password", en then reset with link et voilà, it has done it all. But I had to go into the "internet accounts panel" not through preferences in Mail and then enter into email accounts:

f the connection appears strong, try these steps:

  1. Turn off iCloud Keychain on all devices.
  2. Turn on iCloud Keychain on the device that has the most up-to-date keychain items.
  3. Turn on iCloud Keychain on your other devices. They will be updated with your new iCloud Keychain.

It has nothing to do with safe mode or cache cleaning from user library > cache folder .

The issue is with your system keychain , do you have your iCloud verification code in your records , the method that I suggested was applied many times in my system as I only concentrated for iCloud verification code that has major role and secondary are all passwords .

When new keychain is created the old is deactivated and the passwords have to be filled up manually ( by entering in internet accounts and configuring web mail and I cloud account ) , also the base station password in airport express .

Lastly the machine settings go to default and the home page is to be set up again Safari for Mac: Set your homepage in Safari

to add should I do this?:

If you can't sync iCloud Keychain with other devices

Make sure that your device is on a Wi-Fi or cellular network. If the connection appears strong, try these steps:

  1. Turn off iCloud Keychain on all devices.
  2. Turn on iCloud Keychain on the device that has the most up-to-date keychain items.
  3. Turn on iCloud Keychain on your other devices. They will be updated with your new iCloud Keychain.

I told you not enter open mail and its preferences , but in system preferences > internet accounts .

I had some different method to set up keychain by entering in recovery mode then resetting the keychain in Mac OS Sierra , but still the iCloud verification code is required .

My personal suggestion is do not try to solve the issue by your own unless you are highly expert or have done it before , otherwise you have to install the OS again , you have posted the question few days back .

Consult apple support they will do it in a very short time .

The problem is still there and getting worse. I reset keychain, thenI needed to enter passwords for all email accounts except an iCloud account, new passwords mind you. two were accepted with old passwords, and now all the remaining ones give the same warning the whole problem started with when I wanted to install a new email account. On both macbook Pro and iMac. One of the email accounts that got blocked all of a sudden after 20 minutes did accept the new password but not the others.

Also I keep getting the request for typing in login passwords like "accounts wants local item keychain".

Same problem when I used a different user account on the iMac but this was an existing account but hitherto not used.

Should I make a new account all together ? when I logged into that account it was asking me about keychains, I said no, weird because this is an independent account. I did not do the safe mode yet nor cache cleaning. I had never had such a persistent problem before in all the years of using Macs.

Dear ,

Nlesh ,

When the Mac user set up a new iCloud Keychain account a 4 digit iCloud verification code is created and if you have saved in your diary or a safe place it will always help if some issues are in iCloud Keychain ( mean to say it is very easy to configure ) .

For every user the code is different , thats what I asked .

You are little bit confused ( please don't take it in another way ) , the two Mac have different preferences , don't configure the two Macs for the time being you can call in apple support via phone and consult senior advisors , they are expert and will set up your iCloud Keychain easily .

Best wishes !!

Not sure I follow u, everything has been resolved. But I will from now on have a professional on site or Apple support (not too impressed except Genius bar if you get an experienced enough person), you are absolutely correct in that!, it is too time-consuming and risky even with all the great suggestions from folks like yourself. These are work computers. Apple software used to be a lot less prone to odd issues like this. I have been using Apple for a long time now, before OSX.

However I also think there is an issue with Godaddy password reset, running besides this keychain issue. Reset through admin console did not get through even though it said it did, several times.

Thanks again and have a great day/evening

I have done various experiments in my machine few years back regarding keychain , in the starting couldn't sort out and have to install the OS , now what I do deliberately corrupt the iCloud Keychain in one of my computer sometimes , but always successful with the help of I cloud verification code that I always keep in my mind and written safely .

Any ways , your issue is been sort out and that is good .

Best Wishes !!
