corrupt backup and can't delete it

I get the message below when I try to back up my phone. There are no backups showing in device preferences, so nothing to delete. How can I delete a backup that isn't there?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

From your post, I understand that you are trying to create a backup of your iPhone using iTunes, but when you do, you are running into an error about a corrupt backup.
