30HZ only on 4K with Macbook Pro 2017

Since Apple no longer makes external monitors I was recommended by Apple rep to purchase an LG 4k monitor to get the closest experience to their Thunderbolt monitor.

Upon plugging in you quickly realize it is nothing like the experience of an Apple monitor as you cannot get above 30hz screen refresh rate, which is half the amount of the standard 60hz. This is the equivalent of driving a Ferrari in a school zone.

I found this article detailing a method with a patch that will enable you to use a 2016 macbook pro with 4k monitor at 60hz. Problem is it is an "at your own risk".

Has anyone had success with this (not harming your computer) and do you know if Apple will still honor Apple Care Protection if something goes wrong?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
