How to restore a backup to a device that is on Activation Lock

My friend Nolan wiped his iPod touch 5g and doesn't remember the Apple ID that was used, but prior to wiping it we had taken a backup (I'm helping try to fix it). Before we wiped it, the Apple ID password dialogue in the settings screen showed the email, so we want to restore the backup but the device is wiped and is on Activation Lock.

Your friend will have to re-set the password for their iCloud account to remove the activation lock. Until that's done, the device is useless.

They can try resetting it at https://iforgot.apple.com.

If they can't do that, they will have to contact Apple directly. Proof of purchase for the device may be required.
