music on my iPhone help??

I am so confused, I'm not even sure what to ask! I have a duplicate playlist on my iPhone, and want to remove it. I tried to sync my phone to my iTunes on my laptop, and it didn't seem to work. So, then I tried deleting the playlist on my phone, and it came back. I also tried deleting some songs, and those came back to. I read about ITunes Match, and checked my phone to see if I have it turned on, and I don't even see that option. And, I don't think I have ever paid for iTunes Match. But, when I got this phone, all of my music was available in the music app, and I downloaded what I wanted, and created playlists right on my phone. So, now I don't even know if I am using Match. I didn't realize this would be so confusing! Would anyone know what it is that I have? I assume my music is in the cloud?? right?

You know what? I'm not sure I know where to start either.

Actually, I suggest that while you wait for anyone here to chip in to this discussion with a suggestion, you sound out your friends and relatives to see if you can find one who understands iPhones/iTunes and the music therein. I suspect that what you need is for someone to physically look at phone and find the clue to what has happened.

We can start though with:

  1. Have you signed into the iTunes Store from your phone?
  2. Have you put music into your iTunes Library and if so, where did you get it from? (Your iTunes Library means music listed in iTunes.)
  3. You mention that when you got this phone, all your music was already available in the music app. Does this mean that you had a previous iPhone, or an iPod Touch connected up to iTunes, or using the cloud?

I don't know much about iTunes Match, but I think you would know if you have it as you would be paying for it.

Check in your iTunes Library, under Edit/Preferences/General>Show Apple Music Features, as shown in this picture from an Apple support document:

User uploaded file

There's more in these two Apple Support documents here:

Subscribe to iTunes Match - Apple Support

Turn on iCloud Music Library - Apple Support

and there is information on the following website, but be aware that it is not an Apple Support document and not an Apple website:

Ha! the sad thing is, when somebody I know has a question about their iPhone, I am the one they come to! I am normally really savvy when it comes to understanding, and working my phone, so I'm not sure how I became so confused with this whole music thing.

to answer your questions, Yes, I am signed into the iTunes store on my phone. I have purchased music there on my phone, and I have tons of CD's that I uploaded to iTunes that also show up on my phone. All of which I can listen to. All the music I have put on my pc over the last several years is available to me on my phone. From the cloud, I assume. And, I started with the iPhone 4, I believe, and have had every version up to my 7 that I have now. So, I've been using an iPhone and iTunes for a long time. I used to always purchase my music in iTunes on my pc, then plug my phone into the pc to transfer it to my phone. But, at some point within the last 2 years or so, my music is just there when I get a new phone. I was never quite able to understand what the change was that happened- I figured it was some apple update that started it.

It seems to me that I have iTunes Match, but I have never paid for it. I've read about there being 2 different versions of iTunes Match- one is stand alone, and one works with apple music. So, maybe I have the stand alone version? That is where I get confused. I just know that all of a sudden this week I have a bunch of my Christmas music downloaded on my phone, that I did not just recently download. And, one of my playlists is on my phone twice. I have tried deleting the playlist, and it worked, but then later it was back. Stupid cloud. lol
