Trying to erase my old iPhone, but it's won't accept my Apple ID

Trying to erase my old iPhone, but it won't accept my Apple ID. I'm definitely using the right password, I've signed in successfully on my new phone and laptop. Got a feeling that it's something to do with not being able to connect to the server to verify the password. I've tried connecting using 3G and wifi. No luck.

Obviously it won't let me sign out of iCloud or remove the account without the password either. I'm stuck in a frustrating loop, and nobody can seem to help! ☹

All I want to do is restore factory settings so I can give the phone to my nephew.. please help!

It's 100% the same email address / Apple ID.. I just haven't used this device for like a year. Maybe this is the prob, the device is no longer associated with the Apple ID, but the phone won't allow me to remove the Apple ID from the phone without a password (which it can't verify because there decide is no longer associated).

Hugely frustrating, I can't do anything.

Do you have more than one Apple ID? If not, is this old iPhone listed as one of your devices associated with your Apple ID?

Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in - Apple Support

Just one Apple ID, but no its not listed as one of my devices when I log in on the laptop..

If you log into Manage your Apple ID with your only Apple ID AND this iPhone is not listed, then this iPhone has another user's Apple ID associated to it.
