used a sunpak 72-in-1 high speed card reader on my old mbp (2009) usb ported laptop with no problems. New mbp/tb with usb-c port does not work.

There are two card readers in the Apple store that should do the trick:
Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader — Apple - Apple - $29
SanDisk Extreme Pro SD UHS-II Card USB-C Reader - Apple - $49
Take a look at them and see if either will suit your needs.

I am not sure why Apple recommended this, they are looking for a CF card reader, not SD.
