Thunderbird not downloading email

Hi for the last 4 days I've been unable to get anything other than the headers for my icloud mail via thunderbird, A PC solution that has worked perfectly up until now. Another non icloud account on pop3 in TB works fine. Trying to download any message results in server timeout messages. I have an app specific password for this which has worked fine up until now, and am getting no error messages re passwords or anything.

I have tried increasing timeout delay & rolling back to previous thunderbird versions with no joy. I have deleted e mail, and compacted. I also tried rolling back windows to a restore point before the issues started again no joy.

As of yesterday I am no longer even getting the e mail headers. I can log into the account by other means & know there are e mails to download. Any ideas? I suspect some sort of change in security at the Apple end is causing the issue, as I also tried connecting via outlook using icloud for PC which also didn't work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Further to this, for others benefit if you get the same problem. Basically I went into advanced settings for web & email. Turned off ssl/tls filtering. Rebooted & turned it back on again. Restarted thunderbird & all was OK (this fixed outlook & opera too). I'm guessing some sort of certification corruption took place & this resolved it. I've reported the solution back to eset & asked them to add to their FAQ.

One odd thing though while I was testing them Outlook downloaded messages that later weren't visible in TB, or even in the web interface for icloud. How is that possible? Surely imap clients shouldn't delete from icloud server. There are no settings in outlook to leave messages on the server as that shouldn't happen, so I'm puzzled.

OK. So I've found the issue. For the benefit of anyone else who may get this problem. It was being caused by my virus scanner. When I turned off e mail scanning everything TB. Outlook/ Opera all began to work. eset nod32 have obviously made a recent change as I've had e mail scanning working on this software for years without an issue. I'll raise the issue with them. Thanks to those who replied. ATB

I have had this two-factor authentication set up for a while now.

Just to be through, you must have an Apple device if you are using 2FA. Have you changed your Apple ID password recently?

I know you've said there are no password error messages, but it may be related. When you change your Apple ID's password, all app specific passwords are revoked.

Hi thanks for taking the time to reply. I have an ipad which is working fine & I can access mail via the web interface. Also the android solution on my phone is working fine which would not be if I'd changed my apple id password (which I haven't). As I said above I even created a newly generated app specific password for the icloud/outlook solution which didn't work. I have since downloaded opera reader & created a new app specific password for that which also doesn't work. They all time out for some reason. I have asked the question on the thunderbird support group too, but as yet no answers, and as it seems to be affecting multiple non Apple e mail clients it seems more likely that the issue has been caused by some change at Apple's end within the last week or so.
