Hi

Potential free battery replacement

There is an iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown Issues. Follow the instructions here to check your iPhone's eligibility for a free battery replacement and, if appropriate, to arrange service:

iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown Issues - Apple Support

Warm when charging

Apple advises that it can be normal for your iPhone to become warm when using it and also in other situations including when charging it, first setting it up, restoring from a backup and after a software update (when your iPhone may perform background tasks, such as when apps re-index or re-analyse data). The exterior acts as a cooling surface, transferring heat from inside the iPhone to cooler air outside.

Be sure to follow Apple's instructions here:

Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - Apple Support

Apple also notes that charging your iPhone when it is inside certain styles of case may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity. If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when you charge it, Apple advises that you should remove it from its case before charging.

When charging your iPhone, be sure to follow all of Apple's safety and handling guidelines, including those detailed here:

Battery life

If your iPhone is not eligible under the iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown Issues, then - depending on the nature of the issue - it may require battery service.

Before contacting Apple, try the following steps:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS (starting by making a backup):

Restart your iPhone (normally):

Check which apps are responsible for the battery usage:

  • Go to: Settings > Battery > under Battery Usage, select the Last 24 Hours tab.
  • Address any issues with potentially problematic apps (such as by removing and reinstalling them).

Follow Apple's tips for maximising battery life, as detailed here:

When charging your iPhone, follow the instructions in the following support article, including:

Check whether the issue persists after restoring your iPhone to factory settings:

If the issue persists - and/or if you remain concerned that your iPhone gets warmer than it should do - then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having your iPhone checked and, if recommended, serviced:

Thanks. I'm only getting a few hours out a charge the last few days and the bottom half of the back gets quite warm when charging which it didn't use to do. Because of the warm charging I haven't charged it overnight the last few days just to be safe. Last night I charged it to 100% prior to going to bed and it wouldn't turn on this morning (about 7 hours later). Obce I plugged it into the charger it said it had a 4% charge.

I got the issue resolved. In the process of updating iOS10 to the latest version I needed to make enough space on my iPhone to do the update so I deleted some apps I rarely use and I also deleted the FaceBook app, which I do about once a month anyway because it gets bloated. After I did the iOS10 update my iPhone was back to normal and has been fine since, going a day or more on a charge and not getting warm at all while charging. It got me thinking it might have been the FaceBook app though because it was auto-updated last Saturday afternoon or evening and my iPhone was fully charged when I went to bed but only had 4% charge the next morning and charging it on Sunday took about 4X longer than normal, it got real warm while charging (107 degrees on the back measured with my infrared thermometer) and a full charge would last less than an hour. Thanks for your help.
