how to safely eject an SD card or stick

Choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu, control-click it, and choose to eject it. If it shows up in another location, you can control-click it there, or push the button for it if in the sidebar.

If the card is visible on your desktop: Click on its icon in Finder and type command-e, wait for the icon to disappear from your desktop, and then remove the card or jump drive.
