This is a bit of a silly answer. The aim of wireless (QI) charging is to NOT use cables, yet for carplay a cable is required. So it does not matter if the phone is able to be charged with a lightning cable. Imagine if you will an iPhone X on a QI charger in my car with a lightning cable also plugged in. Sillyness. Apple should (and i think they will) enable carplay without a cable whilst wireless charging.

The OP might have wanted to ask a third question such as "Will CarPlay work wirelessly in my car with an iPhone X while I am charging wirelessly if I do not plug in the lightning/USB cable?"

A: Yes, if and only if the car manufacturer or third party entertainment manufacturer enables and supports wireless CarPlay. Otherwise, no.

Wireless CarPlay has been theoretically supported by Apple since iOS 9.1 (I think). It takes two to tango and it is on the car manufacturers to add support. I think wireless charging will be the springboard to motivate car manufacturers to enable and offer it. (IMO)

I figured it out:

Let's go into your iPhone X and ensure that CarPlay is turned on: Go to Settings -> General -> Restriction and ensure that CarPlay is enabled. This may require enabling Restrictions to adjust the CarPlay setting. Restrictions must be turned off after adjusting the CarPlay setting.

That was the problem. Once I did that (and actually rebooted the phone), it worked.

I read an article yesterday and I suspect you'll see an issue with your MB and the NFC Charger. Since iPhone detects NFC as a means to enable Apple Pay, the crux of the article suggested that every time the person put their iPhone X on the MB pad, Apple Pay came up on the screen. I think that's going to be a big issue for MB cars equipped with the NFC charger and iPhone X.

I got it to work - will not work wirelessly yet.

I don’t think there is an update per se. You might want to check your Apple CarPlay settings in your car and on your iPhone.

You might consider changing the name on your iPhone X (->Settings->About) to something like [YourName]’s iPhone X. Also, you might check if you have two different instances of the same purported iPhone in CarPlay listed and active in your car. Mine was re-booting going from a iPhone 6 to iPhone X. I switched back to an authentic Apple lightning cable (v. MFI certified cable). No reboots so far. FWIW.
