ipod nano 7th gen bluetooth not pairing

I can't pair my ipod to any bluetooth device including my macbook. It gives me a message "make sure maccbook is turned on and in range". I get the same message for all devices. I have tried restoring and hard reset but no luck.

iPod nano, Other OS, version 1.0.4 Mac, model MD480c

Obvious questions first:

  • You are using a 7th generation nano, aren't you? As far as I'm aware, it's the only nano with Bluetooth.
  • You have turned the Bluetooth on, haven't you?

Do the headphones have a procedure for making them discoverable and if so, have you executed it? Once you have, look on the nano for devices under the Now Discoverable heading. If the headphones are not on the list, try turning the nano's Bluetooth off then on again. I don't have the latest nano, so no Bluetooth, but I think this is how to make a forgotten device visible again.

If the headphones don't have a procedure to make them discoverable, perhaps they have the Simple Secure Pairing procedure, which usually involves finding the device on your nano's Bluetooth list and tapping it to find and then enter the code on the nano to accept the headphones.

One last try:

  • On your nano, there should be an option (in Bluetooth) to Forget This Device and I suggest you use that to forget the headphones, then find and re-pair them.
  • To forget the device (assuming that it's the same procedure as my iPod Touch)...
    • go into Settings/Bluetooth;
    • find the headphones on your list, next to it will be "Not Connected" and a letter i in a circle, like this one...

  • Tap thei and tap Forget This Device. It should now be removed from the list
  • Once forgotten, go through the procedure to pair the headphones with the nano; perform a scan (on the nano) for new Bluetooth devices. Remember to make the headphones visible. The headphones should appear as a new device.
  • Select the headphones and try pairing now.

If that doesn't work, I can only assume there is a hardware fault, either on the headphones or on the nano.

(Iphone was not on during attempted pairing with Nano).

If you mean that the iPhone was powered down, as opposed to the screen is off, then I'm not sure what else to suggest. But if the iPhone was simply in sleep mode (that is, the screen is off, but the phone is still powered on), then the phone's Bluetooth will still have control of the headphones if its Bluetooth is on.

Specifically, turn off the phone's Bluetooth or power down the phone. Despite the limited range of Bluetooth, the phone could still prevent anything else connecting to your heaphones, even if the phone is in another room on another floor.
