Helpful Tip for Backordered Parts

Hello Everyone -

A recent poor experience with AppleCare has led me to share some information that may be helpful to others that are experiencing "excessive" wait times for parts.

I brought my MBP in to an Apple Store for repair on 12/29 at about 12:20pm, much earlier then their DSL pickup time of 7pm (Yes I am neurotic enough to ask).

Due to the holiday (I can only assume), my computer was received at the Apple Depot on 1/2/07, and was diagnosed. Almost immediately my repair was put "on hold" because a part was "on order".

Today, 1/8/07, I am a bit frustrated to find out why my computer is still on hold.

I call AppleCare and a friendly representative looked into my concern. I received the very generic answer: "Many parts come in every day, and there is no exact date expected... it could be today, but I would say sooner then later. You are lucky it is not a logic board, those have a very long wait."

I reminded her that I am a Pro Care Member, and although I understand the membership does not include faster turnarounds for backordered parts, I feel like my ProCare Membership was a waste.

She assured me that the part would be in soon. I then ask the pessimistic question: "What do you suggest I do when the part isn't in on Friday; marking 2 weeks from the initial repair?"

She then told me a tidbit that I would like to share with you:

If a part is on order for 10 days, you can call up applecare and they must put in a special expedited order for the part. Many people that do not know this can wait much longer then anticipated for a part.

Regardless, I think if the part is still unavailable after 10 business days I may consider complaining to Apple Corporate to regain my $99 for ProCare, as it will technically be deemed useless in my mind.

Good luck with your backordered parts, I just thought this will help others.

And by the way, Apple Displays are on backorder... so if you have a problem with your display, I'd wait a few weeks...

I'm curious if you know what part(s), in particular, are being replaced in your macbook pro and which ones, specifically, are on back order.

The reason I ask is because I actually brought my MBP to the Apple Store on the same day you did. They sent it to the apple store and it reached on the 2nd of Jan. When I checked on the website it said the repair was waiting for the receipt of parts. Then, the computer miraculously arrived the next day. I guess I was just lucky or whatever, but please let me know.

The Display.

My display is being replaced because of multiple dead/stuck pixels.

I understand the transit time between 12/29, that is expected, but an excessive wait for a part - 5 business days - is quite ridiculous.

I let apple know that, and will remind them of that if the wait doubles.

I'm in the same boat waiting on a display replacement. I took mine to the Apple Store in Oklahoma City and 8 days later I am still wating on the part. What irritates me is that the genius bar guy told me the part was in stock but when I called to check on the repair status I was told "we are waiting on the part." No one at the store has been able to explain to me how I went from "the part is in stock" to "we are waiting on the part."
