It's referring to the 2nd gen (the other version of the 3rd gen is simply referred to as REV A). However, it would also require an IOS device capable of mirroring or if you were using a computer you would need a Mac from 2011 or later running OS 10.8 or later.

I'm not sure if it would still be available on the server as it was put out about 5 years ago (with the device being 7 years old).
The only other way is to restore via iTunes and if there was an issue while doing that you would be out if luck for support so I wouldn't recommend it.
What firmware are you running now? You are you having an issue with mirroring? (the update wouldn't be required to do so)
So I have an iPhone 6s running the latest iOS; would that work? Also, does my Apple TV have to be updated to the latest software?
That would work. FYI: The 2nd gen is considered obsolete, with the latest firmware being 6.2.1
It would not be able to run TVOS, which is a different platform, nor receive further updates.
It says that I cannot update at this time. What should I do? I have tried to connect it to my laptop but I can't see it through iTunes.
Update the Apple TV? As I said the 2nd Gen is now considered obsolete, 6.2.1 is the last firmware and there would be no further updates or support for it.
So can I update it to 6.2.1 now?
