How to get custom ringtone onto iOS 11 device?

How to transfer custom ringtone with iTunes 12.7?

Apple support article says to transfer it manually "if you have ringtone in your iTunes". However in iTunes 12.7 there are no ringtones anymore and I can't find a way to transfer custom ringtone my to iPhone.

The iTunes software no longer manages tones for you, but it still lets you inspect which tones are in your phone (see screenshot above).

I got my custom ringtones back by doing the following:

1) Using finder, locate the files in the folder "Tones" under where my iTunes media library is stored

2) From within iTunes, with my iPhone connected, select "Tones" under "On My Device" (screenshot above)

3) Drag the files from (1) onto the blank area in (2) to copy them onto the phone:

4) Click "sync".

5) From my iPhone, choose Settings -> Sounds -> Ringtone: confirm that the missing custom ringtones have been restored and that my default ringtone has been automatically set back to the (now no longer missing) custom ringtone it used to have.

Note: My phone is using iOS 10.3.3; I haven't installed iOS 11 yet. But I had the same problem with "where did my custom ringtones go?" the moment I upgraded iTunes to 12.7.

When I clicked the manual option in the summary, I was able to delete the ringtones. Then I put one back in, following the instructions given in this thread, but the iPhone still won't play it.

This is a glitch for Apple to fix. They need to delete the default ringtone ("opening") or reprogram it so users can once again override it with our custom ringtones.

I've just found a way of doing it, although 12.7 doesn't have tones when you plug the phone in the tones folder should still be visible under the device. If you then locate the iTunes library in finder you can copy and paste the tones back into the old tones folder in the Iphone. I'd tried to drag music tracks directly from iTunes into the tones folder but you can't do that as you get a message that they can't be copied "as iCloud library is enabled on the iPhone" which of course it wasn't!

I did exactly this. I went onto my Windows PC (Win10), opened iTunes, plugged in my iPhone 7 Plus. I went to the "Tones" Section under "On My iPhone". I then went to where I keep all of my ringtones, then I selected all, then I drug and dropped them into the "Tones" Section under "On My iPhone", then I hit SYNC.

I have all of my ringtones back. Hope this helps :-)

I have tried these suggestions, but I am still having trouble with my custom ringtones.

I was able to copy the .m4r files into the Tones folder on my iPhone 6 device, but they would disappear after syncing the phone.

I copied my .m4r files and then converted them into .m4a files and created a Ringtones playlist and put them in there. This way I can use them for my alarms again, but the .m4r files will not stay saved in my phone's Tones folder after the phone syncs.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Thanks.

Well it would t matter if your iTunes did have ringtones still. I deleted it from my phone completely and then copied it back in from my older version of iTunes and it still doesn’t work. Same problem as everyone here and very frustrated! Still have the same old default ringtone. Interestingly, I have a custom tone for my text messages and that works! Weird bugs - cmon Apple!

So, I tried something and I think I know what it is: My original ringtone was created way back in the Stone Age when you could rip a portion of a song and use it as a ringtone (and before Apple made you buy the ringtone). I've just been able to keep using that original tone all this time. I just switched to a ringtone that I had previously purchased and it works fine. So, I think iOS 11 knows the difference between the tones you bought vs. the legacy tones that you might have made previously. At least that is the case with me. Kinda stinks ... 😟

Besides, the only place the file is listed is "on my device," in the Tones folder on my phone.

If you have the iTunes main folder on your computer, there is a Tones folder in the iTunes Media folder. Use Finder to go to /Home folder / Music/ iTunes/ iTunes Media/ Tones and your ringtones are in there. With iTunes open, drag .m4r files from that Tones folder to your device in the sidebar of the iTunes window.

If you are using an external HD for iTunes, there may be complications.

Yes.
I had a Genius Bar appointment this morning, and we delved into this.
The Genius Bar rep and I came to the conclusion that this problem must be a bug in iOS 11, and that a future update will probably fix it. Factory ringtones will work, but custom ringtones won't.
Today's update appeared while I was there, so we installed it on the spot. Made no difference.
