How to get custom ringtone onto iOS 11 device?

How to transfer custom ringtone with iTunes 12.7?

Apple support article says to transfer it manually "if you have ringtone in your iTunes". However in iTunes 12.7 there are no ringtones anymore and I can't find a way to transfer custom ringtone my to iPhone.

The iTunes software no longer manages tones for you, but it still lets you inspect which tones are in your phone (see screenshot above).

I got my custom ringtones back by doing the following:

1) Using finder, locate the files in the folder "Tones" under where my iTunes media library is stored

2) From within iTunes, with my iPhone connected, select "Tones" under "On My Device" (screenshot above)

3) Drag the files from (1) onto the blank area in (2) to copy them onto the phone:

4) Click "sync".

5) From my iPhone, choose Settings -> Sounds -> Ringtone: confirm that the missing custom ringtones have been restored and that my default ringtone has been automatically set back to the (now no longer missing) custom ringtone it used to have.

Note: My phone is using iOS 10.3.3; I haven't installed iOS 11 yet. But I had the same problem with "where did my custom ringtones go?" the moment I upgraded iTunes to 12.7.

I too am having this issue. I have custom ringtones on my phone (created in iTunes from music I ripped via CDs and which play when I navigate to them under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone), but when I receive a phone call, the default "Opening" tone is what is played. I have been griping about this to Apple since at least public beta 5 and they have been absolutely no help. Thus far I have:

  1. Tried setting custom ringtones for specific contacts (no resolution).
  2. Confirmed the tones play in iTunes when my phone is connected to the computer.
  3. Completely removed the ringtones from my device, synced/rebooted the phone, and manually re-added them per the new means of manually managing tones (no resolution).

Currently I am at a loss, and, thus far, Apple seems to be offering no resolution. While this is partly just frustration talking, I have had every iteration of an iPhone since the 3G. That being said, with decisions like this, requiring an army of dongles/adapters on the new MacBooks, nerfing the volume of keyboard clicks to almost inaudible levels, and other "odd" decisions they have made recently, Apple is making me seriously reconsider investing in future iterations of their devices. Upgrades to hardware and software are supposed to improve things, not make them worse. They have been well aware of this issue long before the master release of iOS 11 rolled out the door and they have done absolutely nothing to fix it.

Rant over; if anyone finds a resolution for this, please share. This is driving me up the wall.

Update: Looks like half my custom ringtones work and the other half do not. The ones that do not, Apple has tagged as "purchased" (right-click > item info > file) even though they were not. They were created in iTunes from songs which came from a CD Rip. Unsure how to get around this, but I am investigating. The ones that do work, are not tagged as such. Everything else is identical: file location, extension, etc. I am looking into this, but thought I would update here in case it helps someone else find a resolution faster.

In my case my iPhone running iOS11 would not accept the custom ringtone I had created using an earlier pre 12.7 version of iTunes.

The ringtone was stored both in iTunes and my iMac as an .mp3 file.

I followed Apple Support’s instructions at this link - https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204310 - and used iTunes to convert the .mp3 file into an AAC file with the extension .m4r.

That step also imports the .m4r file into the iTunes Music Library.

I then took the following additional steps.

  1. Right click the .m4r file and chose Show in Finder.
  2. [The iPhone needs to be connected via USB for this] Expand the iPhone’s contents and select Tones.
  3. Click and drag the .m4r file from Finder into the iPhone's Tones pane. This installs the ringtone on the iPhone. It should appear in Settings/Sounds/Ringtone as the first ringtone, should be ticked and should now work as the iPhone’s ringtone [it did in my case].

This is totally what is happening to me. I've used the same custom ringtone I made for my 3G!! Updated to ios 11 yesterday and now it only plays the default marimba even though the ringtone is on my phone and does play. I tried assigning it to a contact as I read that somewhere-didn't work, I powered off my phone-didn't work, I do have the ringer on and I do have the downloaded thing hit in the sounds section. I've done everything I can think of. I cannot get the **** thing to recognize my custom ringtone-same issue as you.

Anyone have any ideas???????

Well i just solved it after a couple of tinkering.

So since the tone folder is the device side and not on the sync menu refer snap 1.

The trick is remember the folder where you added your ringtones for it be updated/sync every time you connect your phone. Now instead of that click on the tone folder, alt + tab to the new ring tone, drag that tone and throw it in the tone sector and it will get added and you will see it in the list and then click apply and sync. thats it.

P.S, i didn't manually manage my music, those settings are fine.

Following your steps it worked for me:

iPhone 6, iOS 11.0.2, iPad Pro 11.0.2, iTunes 12.7 on MacBook Pro with 10.12.6

1. Opened iTunes 12.7, connected iPhone/iPad via usb (wifi connect works as well), clicked on iPhone device icon

2. Opened Finder, navigated to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones folder (ringtone *.mr4 files are still there)

3. Selected all files, right clicked to then copy all

4. Clicked on Tones under On My Device

User uploaded file

5. Clicked on Edit in the iTunes Menu bar, then clicked on Paste

User uploaded file

6. All of my *.mr4 files (purchased and custom) were copied to my device

7. On my device, Settings > Sounds > Ringtone, all of my Ringtones were available to assign to my contacts

8. Ringtones copied this way also found under Settings > Sounds > Text Tone

Fortunately following alisevan0221 steps custom ringtones did work again for me, but I am curious why they would not work for others with very similar devices and environments. After rereading all of the posts in this discussion area, a few observations that that may help or enable someone else with an idea to resolve this problem "before" Apple gets around to it.

My environment: iPhone 6, iOS 11.0.2, iPadPro, iOS 11.0.2, MacBook Pro macOS Sierra 10.12.6, iTunes 12.7

1. With iTunes 12.7 "Tones" are no longer synced with the content in your iTunes media library. The ringtone *.m4r files are still in the Tone folder on the computer. However, when you right click and try to "open" the file the default app of iTunes will not play because iTunes no longer recognizes a *.m4r file. The macOS still associates the *.m4r extension with the iTunes app, but iTunes settings no longer apply to Tones. So, logically applying a "sync" should have no impact on Tones content on devices after doing a manual file copy.

2. The method described by alisevan0221 and others is to manually copy the *.m4r files to the Tones folder on your device. This is not any different then copying files from your computer to a folder on an external drive. The iTunes app is NOT involved in anyway, it is simply a manual file copy from one device to another. The Tones folder on your device is key for the content to be manually copied to a folder found by the iOS for ringtones.

3. After manually copying my *.m4r files to the Tones folder on my iPhone, I did not "sync" with iTunes.

I am able to view the files that were copied via iTunes and the Tones folder under On My Device while the device was connected. The files appear greyed out, but I could still right click on a file.

User uploaded file

4. After a right click and selecting Item Info, File I see the following info:

User uploaded file

Note this ringtone file was created using iTunes 9.0.3. The app used to create a ringtone may be the difference in a ringtone playing or not playing.

5. On my iPhone under Settings > Sounds > Ringtone , I did not have to download any ringtones. All of the ringtones I had manually copied appeared in a section after "Download All Purchased Tones". I do not remember hitting this button. The message below this button states all ringtones purchased will appear. All of my ringtones were created using a back level version of iTunes from purchased songs or CD ripped songs I owned. Perhaps ringtones created this way are considered purchased.

Just my experience, YMMV.

Final point: Might be wise to backup your iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones/ content in a different location. Since iTunes Media folder is supposed to contain content managed by iTunes ( and Tones are no longer in that category of content), the next MacOS release may eliminate the Tones folder.

The App Store has been entirely eliminated in iTunes 12.7, as has the ringtones section of iTunes.

These two guides helped me sync ringtones and apps using iTunes 12.7.

Quick Fixes to iTunes 12.7 Not Syncing to iPhone iPad

Redownload music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store - Apple Support

Use steps below to redownload purchased ringtones on iPhone iPad with iOS 11.

1. Open Settings menu on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 11.
2. Tap on Sound & Haptics > Ringtones.
3. Tap Download All Purchased Tones to redownload ringtones to fix "iTunes won't sync to iPhone iPad" issue after the new iTunes 12.7 update.
Note that some ringtones you bought before might fail to redownload to iPhone iPad.

If you have some ringtones you created before with iTunes, similar to apps not available on App Store, you can find them in iTunes media folder.
Mac: Folder > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Tones and find ringtones that are not purchased from iTunes.
Windows 10-7: C: > Users > Username > My Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Tones.

How to move ringtones to iPhone iPad in iTunes 12.7

iTunes 12.7 won't sync ringtones to iPhone iPad, and you can see no Ringtones section in iTunes 12.7, but you can manually add ringtones to iPad or iPod touch in iTunes 12.7.

1. Open iTunes 12.7, and connect your iPhone or iPad to computer.
2. Find the ringtone on your computer. If the ringtone was stored in iTunes library before, you can find it in the Tones folder under iTunes media folder.
3. Directly drag and ringtone from computer to your iPhone or iPad in the left pane of iTunes.

Make sure the file format is .m4rUser uploaded file

.m4r is a special format only used for ringtones on Apple mobile devices.

If it is anything but that... ie: .m4a, .mp3... it will not work. Also, make sure the ringtone is no longer than 30 seconds.

To do this, if you are on a Mac, just click on the file and hit enter.

Afterwards, highlight the file extension and delete it.

Type in .m4r and hit enter

When it asks if you want to use the file format, click "Use .m4r"

That should be it!

Then follow the steps ben_ellis has provided above.

This solved my problem. All my calls notify me with the ringtone I have made.

Go to HARDRIVE- USERS-USER-MUSIC-ITUNES-ITUNES MEDIA-TONES

Drag .m4r file to DEVICE in iTunes over Tones and wait two seconds for it to allow you to drop directly into the TONE folder. If you don't HOLD it over before dropping, it will go directly into your music folder.

I am guessing this makes it easier to put music in the music folder as that is the default destination. So you must wait a few seconds for it to allow you to choose the TONES folder destination
