I've read all the supporting documents etc. what happens when its comes to backup and restore to a new iPhone etc is all the apps etc going to be there? do I delete the Tones and Mobile Applications folders from finder in iTunes Media folder as iTunes can't see them now?

thanks in advance

I've finally figured it out. You need to enable the option to "Manage music and videos" and click Apply on the device's summary page in iTunes. Once that's done, you can delete the ringtone in iTunes (on the Mac) by selecting it from Tones under the device and tap the Delete key.

I do not have this option in my device summary page. I am having my kiddos create ringtones from scratch in Garage Band and although Garage Band creates the correct file type and "puts" the ringtone in iTunes, we can no longer access it?

Grrrr. Not the way I wanted to start my school day. I HATE when you guys make this kind of change. 😟User uploaded file

The iOS apps folder can be deleted on your Mac because apps are longer synced from the computer. The Tones folder is no longer automatically synced either to your phone, but the upgrade didn't remove those ringtones from your phone. You'll want to keep your Tones folder but it can reside anywhere on your computer.

What I haven't figured out yet is how to remove custom ringtones from the phone. It wasn't described in this article (Manually manage content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes - Apple Support) and I'm hoping they update it.

I am replying "to myself" because I don't know how else to close this loop. As it turns out, I don't believe you CAN see ringtones that you create anymore in iTunes. However, if you navigate to Music>iTunes>iTunes Media you will either see a Tones folder or an Import folder. If I understand this correctly, the Tones folder contains Tones that you have purchased, but the Import folder contains ringtones that you have created [like in GarageBand]. I hope this helps someone else out there. It sure didn't start my school day on a good note. Took me almost 2 hrs. to figure it out. 😟

Hi DrDebi,

Yes, you're correct. There's no longer a Tones section with the iTunes app. Additionally, the Tones folder you mentioned within the iTunes Media folder (in the Finder) no longer needs to stay there. In fact, you can drag a custom created tone (onto the device in iTunes) that resides in *any* folder on your hard drive. I also empathize with your two hours spent -- I wish this was much more obvious because we all have better things to do with our time than find undocumented workarounds.

My problem is, I have four ringtones (purchased from the iTunes Store) on my phone, but nothing showing up in iTunes, no matter how many times/different ways I sync. So, I have no way to delete them. Spent almost two hours on the phone with Apple Support today and they weren't able to do it, despite connecting to both my PC and my phone. They had to escalate the issue. Unbelievable.

Simply does not work. Have managed to get 3 ringtones on but others simply refuse to copy over with a ”link”being mentioned then nothing. Typical of Apple to get rid of something very useful and replace it with nothing. Books and pdfs are the same where the option again been “taken away”. Playing god again with something that didn’t need fixing!!!
