Excel 2016 crashes all the time on Mac OS Sierra

If the above doesn't work, see if the .plist is corrupt.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.microsoft.Excel.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Remove Excel preferences and Office settings

1. Make sure that all Microsoft Office for Mac programs are closed.
2. On the Go menu, open the root/hidden Library folder. (~/Library/Group Containers)
   Note The Library folder is hidden in any Mac OSX by default. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.
3. Open the Group Containers folder.
4. Look for a folder whose name ends ".Office," and open it.
5. In this folder, look for the Com.microsoft.officeprefs.plist file.
6. Delete this file by dragging it to the trash. This will delete the Office preferences that you set during the initial start of the application.
7. Restart the application, and check whether the issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, delete the whole folder that you found in step D. This will delete all previous settings and preferences that were set across all applications.
   Note This will reset Office back to the first-run phase of initial set up. It will also re-create a folder in the ~/Library/Group Containers location.

Per this article (Office 2016 for Mac, macOS Sierra potential crash issues - Office Support) it appears that you should try turning off Auto Proxy Discovery or Automatic Proxy Configuration in system preferences.

Go to System Preferences and open Network.

Click on Advanced and go to Proxies.

Check if "Auto Proxy Discovery" or "Automatic Proxy Configuration" is turned on.

This is the only official recognition of problems between MacOS Sierra and Excel 2016 and it says that these problems might occur when changing networks, so if that sounds similar to your problem, try this fix.

Otherwise, try reinstalling Office. It appears that that worked for some people (Fix Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint crash in macOS Sierra 10.12 - Super User)

It's important that Office 2016 be updated to the latest version in Sierra. Current version is 14.38.

If you aren't seing the latest updates it's possible your AutoUpdater (MAU) is out of date.

I've tried all of the proposed solutions including yours, but none of them seem to work. Have they been successful for all others that have tried? Excel is crashing for me every time on a basic auto-filter action.
