So if you have taken Apple up on its offer of an Upgrade, or you went and did it yourself and are now Stuck here’s how to fix it…..

1. Got to apple and get the old version of iTunes https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1934?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
2. Uninstall the new version of iTunes
3. Install the old version of iTunes (if you run it, you’re going to be told the it won’t work as you library has been upgraded to a newer version!)
4. Worry not, all of your stuff is still there!! Open up your iTunes folder (c:\Users\~user~\Music\itunes\iTunes Library Files\Previous iTunes Libraries)
5. Look for the file made before your update (in my case “iTunes Library 2017-03-22.itl” )
6. Copy it
7. Go back into c:\Users\~user~\Music\itunes\iTunes Library Files, and paste it
8. Delete the “iTunes Library.itl” file
9. Rename “iTunes Library 2017-03-22.itl” to “iTunes Library.itl”
10. That’s it, your back

All of your files are there… and it’s as if you never went away!

As of September 14, 2017, the original post incorrectly references an iTunes Download link for reinstalling on Windows & MacOS. The link does not allow you to download the Windows (.exe) installer, it only downloads the MacOS (DMG) installation file.

If you want to download the proper iTunes Windows installer, visit the discussion listed below on the Apple discussion forum. Personally I would grab the file now because I can see Apple deleting that discussion to prevent folks from being able to go back to iTunes versions that proceeded 12.7.

Edit: Sincere apologies for this redundant post, I didn't realize someone else posted the same link, and I didn't know how to delete my post.

To keep your MAC apps books etc DO NOT DELETE THE ITUNES LIBRARY FILES

THIS FOLDER CONTAINS THE OLD LIBRARY FILE YOU WANT OT RENAME.. EVERYTHING ELSE YOU CAN GO FOR. \Users\username\Music\iTunes\

An Alternative is just to restore from time machine...

Kill All Tunes and iTunes Helper process by using Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities > Memory.

Then Go Into Applications>Utilities>Terminal enter the command sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app

restore iTunes from the backup
