Docked apps not opening

I started my mac this morning and it made a chime sound like the error chime and nothing on the docked apps will open. My mouse also does not work now even though the batteries are good. When I click on one of the docked apps it will tell me no available windows or it will open and close the web browser instead of the intended app.

Try an SMC reset:

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

I'd like to get your Mac functioning to the point where you can use EtreCheck. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. If you can use it, after it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

One last thing you might try... since the new account didn't work it indicates the issue is global.

So try using the 10.12.6 Combo Update to overwrite any system software that is corrupt.

Download macOS Sierra 10.12.6 Combo Update

The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings, but that said you should always have a backup.

Good luck. If you contact Apple Support be sure to tell them everything you've already tried to sort it.

So after spending over an hour on with tech support and 3 different support persons, the problem with the apps not opening is fixed. Seems the auto update of ITunes somehow messed things up because on the track pad preference the "Force click and Haptic feedback" box was checked. After that was unchecked everything except for the mouse works correctly. Note I did not make any changes to my MAC it was all the auto update that did it. So now i am wondering if the update messed up my mouse or if it just decided to quit communicating with my MAC. So the saga continues 😉
