Duplicate songs in iTunes with cloud symbol?

Like many others, I have a ton of duplicate songs in my iTunes music library (on my Mac), with the duplicates having the iCloud symbol next to them. I don't want the duplicates in my library. I have researched this issue on line, and all the solutions require me to uncheck an option in Preferences that doesn't exist in my version of iTunes. I don't have any kind of "show iCloud songs in iTunes" or whatever it is. Screenshots are below.

How do I remove these duplicate songs from my iTunes library?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

That doesn't really solve the problem. They're not TRUE duplicates...in each pair, one has an iCloud symbol and one doesn't. I want a more permanent solution, I don't want to keep deleting individual songs...I want to know why the second one (with the iCloud symbol) is appearing in the first place, and how to shut that entire feature off.
