Accidental dialling - calls routed instantly now?

I'm sure we've all done that thing where you accidentally tap someone's number by mistake and it dials them, but you hit "end call" immediately (like less than half a second) and it's all good.

Well over the past week that's happened to me twice, and each time the person called me back to ask what was up. And I caught those accidental calls super fast, seemingly in a microsecond. This should be more than quick enough to hang up before the call registers at the other end, but they're actually going through. What's changed? Have call routing speeds been improved so much that calls are registered on the destination phone as soon as you tap the number? If so, this is horrible. It's just common decency to give a dialler the chance to abort the call before it registers. They should at least give the user the option to enable some kind of short delay.

I just accidentally called a client at 1:30am on his wedding night and he called me back to ask what's up. How awkward is that? I did it while wiping my screen and I aborted it with lightning fast reflexes. Guess that's not enough now, huh?

You're missing the point here, which is that calls seem to be routed instantly as soon as you tap the person's number now. Prior to this, you would at least have the chance to abort the call quickly without it registering on the other person's phone. Accidentally tapping someone's number (or tapping the wrong number) is something which happens to all of us at one time or another, and the last thing you want in such a situation is for the other person to see a missed call and wonder why you're calling them.

To "accidentally dial" as you describe, you would have had to either perform several steps, or, more likely, not kept your iPhone in a default state where when you're not using it (e.g., about to clean the screen), it would open from a lock state to the home screen.

In other (briefer) words, get out of your apps (especially Phone) when you're done with them. Keep your iPhone in a state such that when you unlock it, it opens to the home screen.

I would think the point would be this:

"I accidentally dial ... How can I prevent this from happening?" The answer is to keep out of the Phone application whenever possible.

I suppose. In the ten years I've used iPhones, it's happened to me perhaps twice, or maybe three times. As you note, the connection does occur very quickly and your caller ID lands on the recipient's list. I have found that to be true for years. But in my case, none of these two or three recipients ever called me back.
