I have figured out the "trick" that I was missing (and seeking). The exposure slider doesn't require you to actually slide the sun icon up and down--you can actually slide your finger up and down the screen to adjust exposure and that moves the sun icon up and down the line. It's a rare miss for Apple in terms of intuitive usability! No one explains that you're actually moving your finger up and down the screen rather than trying nudge the icon on the slider itself.

Hi JanOldenburg. You might take a look at other camera apps with more intuitive controls. For example Camera+ or 645Pro.
Thank you. I understand that is what I am supposed to do. My problem is that the sunshine slider doesn't slide, or when you try to slide it, the focus goes away. I'm actually looking for tips on how to make the sunshine icon slide...

I understand from your post that when adjusting the brightness when taking photos it is not working as expected. Once you tap the focus you can then run your finger up or down the screen anywhere on the screen to adjust the brightness.
