Time capsule won’t connect to Sky Q router

I’ve had Sky Q installed with a Sky Q router and Sky Q booster. The TV and internet work great, but my Time Capsule won’t see the Sky Q router to connect to the internet. I previously had a network using the TC and Airport Expresses to boost the signal. I only want to use the TC as a back-up device now for 2 iMacs, does anyone have any ideas how I make this happen? Thanks.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

The Time Capsule will need to be......

1) Reset back to its original default settings

2) Connected to the Sky router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection

3) Reconfigured to accept the settings of the Sky router

Apple expects you to use the Time Capsule wireless to back up your Macs to the device, but things might work if your goal is to back up to the Time Capsule using the Sky router wireless.

If you find that backups will not work reliably using the Sky wireless, then you will need to use the Time Capsule wireless to back your Macs, or connect the Macs to the Time Capsule using wired Ethernet cable connections.

Then at this point, the only thing that I can suggest is to reset the Time Capsule once more using a Hard Reset or Factory Default Reset, and use the AirPort Utility setup "wizard" on your Mac or iPhone / iPad to try things again.

I assume that you have tested the Ethernet cable that connects from the Sky router to the Time Capsule to verify that you have a good cable, correct?

Post back if you need step by step instructions to set up the Time Capsule using Apple's setup "wizard". Assuming that the Time Capsule is operating correctly and the WAN "O" port is not damaged, the "wizard" will automatically apply the correct settings to the Time Capsule.

Verify that the Ethernet cable connects from one of the LAN <--> Ethernet ports on the Sky router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.

Power off both the Sky router and the Time Capsule

Wait a minute

Power up the Sky router for a few minutes

Power up the Time Capsule again

If devices still cannot connect to the Internet, we'll have to start all over again and set up the Time Capsule again using the AirPort Utility setup "wizard", which will apply the correct settings to the Time Capsule.

Power up the Time Capsule if it is not already on, and let it run a few minutes

Then, hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 7-8 seconds and then release the button

Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status

I assume that you have tested the Ethernet cable that will connect the Sky router to the Time Capsule....to make sure that it is operating correctly. If you have not done this, first connect the Ethernet cable to one of the four LAN <--> ports on the back to the Sky router and connect your Mac....or other computer....to the other end of the Ethernet cable. Temporarily turn off the WiFi on the computer to make sure that the wired connection will be active.

Check to make sure that the computer can get a good Internet connection that way. If it can, then you know that the Ethernet cable is working correctly and you can proceed to with the setup of the Time Capsule. However, if the computer cannot get a good Internet connection, then you likely have a defective cable that will need to be replaced before you can proceed with the setup of the Time Capsule.

After you have verified that the Ethernet cable is working correctly......

Disconnect the computer from the Ethernet cable and connect the open end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule

If you are using a Mac for the setup of the Time Capsule.......

Click on the WiFi menu at the top of the Mac's screen

Look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station

Just under that listing, click directly on Time Capsule

The example below shows an Airport Express as the New Airport Base Station. You will see Time Capsule on your screen

If you are using an iPhone or iPad for the setup of the Time Capsule.......

Go to the Home Screen on the iPhone / iPad

Tap on Settings (gear icon)

Tap on WiFi

Look for a listing of Set Up New Base Station

Tap on Time Capsule

The example below shows an AirPort Express as the new Base Station, but you will see Time Capsule on your device screen

When you click on Time Capsule (using a Mac), or tap on Time Capsule (using an iPhone or iPad), that will start up the setup "wizard". It will take a few seconds to display a screen that looks similar to the example below, except that you will see a Time Capsule pictured on the screen

User uploaded file

Network Name......Type in a name for the wireless network that the Time Capsule will provide

Base Station Name......Type in a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule

Password.....Type in a password that will be used for the wireless network and the device

Verify.....Type in the same password again to confirm

Click Next

The setup "wizard" will configure the Time Capsule correctly and automatically

When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done

Now, connect to the Time Capsule wireless network that you created and make sure that the Mac or iPhone / iPad can connect to the Internet.

Then, connect your Mac or iPhone / iPad to the Sky router wireless network and check again to make sure that the device can connect to the Internet

Please post back on your progress

Please do not try to back up your Mac yet, as there are more settings that will need to be adjusted on your Mac before backups will work reliably.

I would take the TC into an Apple Store and have them check the unit out. The setup should work.....unless Sky really is doing something that will prevent other routers from joining the network.

The TC will certainly power up without an Internet connection, but you will have to manually switch to the TC wireless whenever you want to back up the Mac. Then, once the backup is done, you will have to manually switch back over to the Sky wireless for your Internet connection.

If you are trying to connect the Mac to the TC using an Ethernet cable, you will have to set the Connection Order on the Mac for Ethernet priority. If the priority is not set to Ethernet, then there will be no signal over Ethernet when you connect the Mac to the TC using an Ethernet connection.

Selling the TC and using a USB hard drive directly connected to the Mac will be a much better solution.....faster and more reliable, and the Mac can stay connected to the Sky network and Internet at all times......so you won't have to do any "switching" when the Mac backs up.

Hi. I have reset the TC and it is connect to the Sky Q router using an Ethernet cable. I have put the router settings into the TC settings and tried connecting using Static and Link-local only as advised on another forum post.

The TC will create a new network but won’t join the Sky router or connect to the internet under it’s own network. So the Macs can’t access the TC disk to back up.

Sep 19, 2017 4:56 AM in response to Bob Timmons

This is the same process I have tried numerous times without success. The TC sets up a network ok but won’t connect to the internet. TC error says no internet connection and no dns servers. That’s when I tried changing the TC set up to include the Sky router dns settings.

The Mac also won’t connect direct to the router - I tried 3 different Ethernet cables, one brand new. Think it is still the incompatibility between Sky and Apple that has been going on every since Sky Q was launched.

Think I may have to resort to an external hard drive. Assume TC cannot be used as a hard drive as it won’t power up without an internet connection?

Thanks.

The TC is brand new, so I doubt the fault lies there. I’ll try connecting the TC to the Mac and using an external HD on the other one, as agree that switching networks will be tedious.

There is definitely an issue with Sky and Apple, as people have been having problems connecting with a Sky Q router since it came out. I was hoping they were just ‘teething’ troubles, but clearly not!

Thanks for all your help.
