When you save your files to an external hard drive or a backup drive do they remain encrypted? And if you change your password do they require your previous password to be unlocked?

When you encrypt your files and save them to an external hard drive or a backup drive, then change your FileVault password, are those files only openable using the original password?

If you have FileVault turned on your main drive and you copy a file to an external drive (via any method such as Finder, Time Machine, a 3rd party backup program, etc) the file is not encrypted unless you also have FileVault turned on in the external drive.
