That pesky error message pops up fairly frequently.
First thing I would do is update to current versions of iMovie (10.1.6) and Sierra operating system. See if that cures it.
If that doesn't work, take a look at this thread that discusses the compressor kit error issue. It mentions solutions that worked for some and didn't work for others.
com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1 with iMovie !!

I believe I am running the latest versions of OS and iMovie that I can. I don't believe my mac will run Sierra. I ran all the updates available recently, and it was after running system updates that iMovie seemed to stop working.
