Plug old Firewire DV camera into USB using Firewire/USB adapter?

Let me start off by saying that I know I could buy an Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire connector that would probably enable an old DV camcorder to send footage into FCP X.

However, my question concerns the feasibility of using a Firewire to USB connector.

Would it be possible to get footage from the old camcorder whilst plugged into the USB socket or is this an impossible quest?

Finally, what solutions have others used to download DV to a computer like the current iMac which is only USB and Thunderbolt equipped.

Incidentally I still have 3 Macs with Firewire ports but I would prefer to save time by importing the footage directly into my new iMac rather than having to transfer it from one of the old computers.

Final Cut Pro X, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 27" 5K iMac, Mac mini i5 2.5GH

The obvious solution is the one you already mentioned: Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter. Or you can import to an external drive connected to one of the older macs and then attach this drive to the new mac. Or you can copy the files over your local network (which will not be that bad if you have the machines wired to Gb Ethernet).

All of the above are known to work without fuss. Usb-to-Firewire adapter? Never heard of any. If you can find one it may not be cheaper than the Thunderbolt adapter-that is assuming such usb-fw exists. Plus it may be plagued with driver problems since it is likely old and not made for current os... seems to me that it might just be a bag of hurt for no benefit.

Thanks Luis, I hadn't thought of your separate hard drive solution . . . which shows how little thought I have given to the matter so far! The only snag will be when my old Macs bite the dust.

Regarding the USB idea, I agree with you that it almost certainly wouldn't work.

To that end I have just done a test with my old LaCie D2 Quadra HDD which can connect to a computer via FW 800, FW 400, USB 2 and eSATA

I connected the D2 to my iMac via USB 2 and plugged my FW DV camera into the D2 but there was no way I could get the iMac or FCP X to recognise the camera.

As with most Apple products the Thunderbolt-FW adapter is ridiculously overpriced.

I would not worry too much about your old macs. Yes, they will someday die. But your Firewire camera may well die before them. And your tapes, well... it is a good idea to extract your valuable videos from the past and bring them to the present.

Some two or three years ago, I copied all my old Digital8 tapes (and some older analog Hi8 tapes) to a mac, converting to H264 in the process. These are memories of my young children that are immensely valuable to me, but not the cameras I used to film them. They were first analog, and then digital but recording in SD in DV format, and I would not want to use those cameras anymore. The quality that amazed me 16 years ago is very poor today.

Those cameras were, in different moments in time, handed down to family members.

Quicktime Player doesn't play DV material without converting, and soon may not play it at all.
