LG Ultrafine 5K incompatible with Windows 10 Creators Update 1703

I run a MBP 2017 13 inch with an LG Ultrafine 5K. I use both macOS and Windows on Bootcamp. The monitor was working perfecting on Windows Anniversary Update 1607, but when I updated to Creators Update 1703 it broke in a very annoying way. Now it randomly goes black for 3 seconds and comes back again every now and then (maybe once every 2 minutes.

I have tried the following:

  1. Replaced the TB3 cable
  2. Plugged in the normal power charging cable in addition to the monitor cable (even though I don't need to)
  3. Tried the Intel graphics drivers that come with Bootcamp (21.20.16.4664) and the two available updates from Intel (21.20.16.4678 and 21.20.16.4771)
  4. Updated the LG Ultrafine 5K firmware using the app for macOS
  5. Returned the monitor to Apple and gotta a completely new one (same issue still)
  6. Downgraded to Anniversary Update (fixes the problem)

I like the Creators Update because it fixes a lot of the issue with Windows DPI scaling which is useful with a 5K monitor.

The monitor works fine on macOS.

I'm about 120% confident that the monitor just isn't compatible with the Creators Update. Any tips for how to get Apple, LG and/or Microsoft to sort this out?

Writing this post involved about 4 blackouts.

Cheers.

It's interesting that this affects non-Intel GPUs as well. That would suggest the fault is being caused by an incompatibility between the Creators update and the LG monitor and/or MacBook Pro. The latest windows update may have changed the contract between the drivers and the OS, so the hardware vendors potentially need to update their drivers to reflect that change.

Unfortunately, we can probably not expect any support from LG, given their abysmal response to my enquiry:

"Thank you for contacting LG Customer Support. It is unfortunate to hear that you are having issues with your 5k monitor. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

Given that you already tried two monitors, yet the issue is still happening, then this only means that there is incompatibility between the monitor and Windows OS.

Please be advised that this product is solely released by Apple as it is dedicated for MAC OS. It may be working with Windows OS, however there will be incompatibility issues with some features."

I also spoke to Apple Care who advised that as long as Windows boots, they have fulfilled their responsibility.

Contacting Microsoft yielded a more positive, albeit generic, response that they will pass it on to their developers. Let's hope that Microsoft are able to fix the problem. Apparently Apple and LG have absolved themselves of responsibility for this issue.
