HPIJS printer support on Sierra? (Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP, hpijs drivers)

Looking for help getting the HPIJS printer drivers operating in macOS Sierra.

I have a number of HP Deskjet 5650 printers that HP hasn't supported since the release of OS X Mavericks. As a workaround I have been using the HPIJS suite to enable these printers on my Macs running Mavericks & Lion. (The currently available HPIJS components are: hpijs-3.10.6, Foomatic RIP 4.0.6 and Ghostscript 8.71.)

I recently upgraded a couple of my Macs to macOS Sierra ... but unfortunately, Ghostcript 8.71 will not install under Sierra (turns out this is a known problem, so it's not unique to me).

Does anyone know if the latest version of Ghostscript (9.21) will install in Sierra? ... and even better, does it work with the other two HPIJS components (Foomatic RIP 4.0.8 and hpijs-3.10.6)?
