Hi,

I had the same problem, and then I realized I was using gboard instead of the original apple keyboard. I tapped the globe button which changed the keyboard. When I did this, I found the icon I was missing. Give that a try.

Hello vancouversuz,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are having an issue using handwritten messages and sending a message with effects. I'll be glad to help assist you with this.

These features are available in iOS 10 and later, so you will see these in iOS 11. Can you please let me know what happens when you try to send an iMessage with effects?

Also, please see this support article: Use message effects with iMessage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch .

Best Regards.

Thank you! I was so bummed I thought I had lost all my sketch art that I annoy my friends with. So the steps are:

1. turn phone sideways to landscape and the extended keyboard will show up

2. hit the "sketch" key down at the bottom right hand corner and the old sketch pad and saved sketches will show up

3. unless one hits the "keyboard" button next to the saved sketches, the sketch pad will show up automatically in the future by rotating phone to landscape

4. YAY!!!

That is really stupid because I have ONLY the Gboard keyboard enabled to not have to switch between keyboards always and before iOS 11 rotating the phone used to bring up handwriting.

Now I would have to enable at least one standard keyboard in order to have that stupid little button at the bottom right to get handwriting again 😡

One of the things post-Steve-Jobs that makes Apple more and more unattractive......

Yeah i just noticed the same thing... SO LAME!!!!

Also, if Apple is going to release a New IOS, they Legally have to make sure all past IOS apps work... they cannot blame the Consumer or App owners!!!! regardless of “their”(Apple)policies...

this is america, and we have rules that Apple and Microsoft do NOT fallow today, that “their Policies” do NOT override.

This issue is out of hand Today, and has become full blown FORCED “Product” issues!!... these bugs are because they never stick with 1 iOS very long, therefore, we will always be updating. ONLY TO FORSURE HAVE MORE ISSUES!!!!

“Monopoly” anyone? 😉

I thought the same way until I bought one of those s8 things. Next thing you know, I came running back to my iPhone! Honestly, I feel that all phones/platforms have their issues, but some have way more than others, and some are more fitting based on your profession/hobbies/lifestyle.

As far as the gBoard only thing goes, I didn't try to make things work with only gBoard enabled. I can tell you that since writing this, the issue has gone away as my phone now opens the handwritten message automatically when turning my phone sideways. I still do have both keyboards enabled though, and maybe if you do the same, your iPhone might start treating you better? I wish I had a more technical answer to give you, but it just started working with no further interaction by me past iOS updates.

I can only imagine that the iOS version present when this first started happening must have left some remnant things jammed up in the OS during update or had some sort of minor bug that affected only some users (merely speculation). After a while (maybe a couple weeks?), the handwritten message screen pops up every time my phone is sideways in the messages app. I am on the latest iOS right now with no issues.
