iOS 11 Podcast app "Mark as Played" Missing

How do you make a podcast episode "Mark as Played" in the iOS 11 update?

Similarly, is there anyway I can see which podcasts I am subscribed too and which I am not. I liked being able to see that in the old version because some serialized podcast I try to listen in order and it was a handy way of telling difference podcasts apart.

In short, the new Podcast app does not seem like an improvement.

So I updated on Friday and went to play my poscasts this morning on the way to work and will only play one episode at a time, very frustrating and non-intuitive, IMHO Apple in their wisdom have broken a functional and intuitive app.

With the new version you have to click down 3 levels to add to a playlist, still haven't worked out how to autoplay all new episodes overall, not just a single station.

What I liked with the pre-ios11 was the unplayed episodes easily accessible on the front screen where I can see in what order they arrived in and will play in and easily delete or remove an episode I don't want to listen to. Easy and intuitive!!!

I encourage those not liking anything about the new podcast app to provide feedback to apple here: Feedback - Podcasts - Apple

Yeah, but if they had done that there wouldn’t be a reason for these discussions. 😜

Apple did explain Stations when they first introduced them to the Podcasts app as part of the Apple Keynote for that upgrade. It was what brought me back from a third-party podcast app. When I started with Podcasts, I was building Smart Playlists and syncing with iTunes. That was even nicer than Stations. There were/are more data fields you can manage.

I’ve been surprised by how many people enjoy podcasts without using Stations. For me it is necessary for managing and playing podcasts. It may be time for me to build some YouTube tutorials.

I switched to pocketcast, really enjoying it, and the podcast I pay for, I got working too,

this is the layout Apple should had used, simple and stylish, at least that is my opinion.

Do not think I will go back to the Apple podcast app again, too much hassle.

In the old days it was easy to do things in Apple software, new things came naturally to me,

today you have to find the new things first, because Apple in some strange thinking, decides not to tell people of many of their changes.

I remember a few years ago I got very annoyed with the iTunes program on OS X, it was in relation with using the sinc button on my 27inch iMac, everything in relation with syncing the phone was in the left hand upper side of the screen, but to sync I had to drag the mouse all the way to the button right corner to press the sync button, who got the idea to put it there?...... totally not in sync (pardon the pun) with Apple own software guidelines.

Happy was I, that after the next update, Apple made it possible to sync from the left upper corner again!

but that only lasted a few months until an other OS X update came out, and the sync was moved down to the right corner again!!!

I am sorry to say that the last few years I have lost a lot of faith with the way Apple makes software, often it is dummed down, like killing the fantastic photo program Aperture and giving us Photos, which is a great program in itself, if they gave it to us instead of iPhoto, but kept updating Aperture.

Apple made a big mess out of the redesign of the podcast app. Look for Library - you should see your subscribed shows. Or you can search or browse, either your Library or the ios Podcast app. Library gives you access to episodes. Once you listen to the whole show it will show played & eventually be deleted, & you can Swipe left to see Delete in red. But the episode will not delete immediately. As I said the redesign is a BFM. I have spoken several times to a senior advisor & there is no answer to any of the mess unless they hear from everyone who hates the app.Hope this helps

Big time mess I agree. I’ve spoken several times to a senior “advisor” i.e. beyond the people who you get first in tech support. Right now there are no answers to the problems us podcast listeners have met with this ios 11 FU. Maybe in some big software update? They took something that was ez to use & took it back to the beginning of time.

Agree so much. I have spoken several times to a second level support advisor who cannot come up with the goods of explaining anything about this new app. Csn you imagine driving for several hours with no reception so wanting to listen to non stop podcasts & they won’t play because some Apple software engineer doesn’t know how to work an app? Unbelievable.

May I parse your message a bit?

Apple made a big mess out of the redesign of the podcast app.

Very true, but an understatement.

Once you listen to the whole show it will show played & eventually be deleted, & you can Swipe left to see Delete in red.

It may be marked played, but the app will still offer it to play now. It makes no sense

But the episode will not delete immediately.

If a user deletes an episode, why would it not be deleted? The statement is correct, but the perhaps delete should mean now and not an indeterminate future point.

As I said the redesign is a BFM.

BFM?

I have spoken several times to a senior advisor & there is no answer to any of the mess unless they hear from everyone who hates the app.

There are better podcast apps. Apple seems to have abandoned podcasts. Apple Music drives revenue. Podcasts do not.

My Boyz,

Start in your Library. Tap on the Edit button. You'll see a link for New Station.

If you haven't used Stations before, start with this example:

Title: Recent Audio

Play: Manual Show Order

Group by Podcast: On

Episodes: Most Recent 2 Episodes

Media Type: Audio

Unplayed Only: On

Choose Podcasts: Include All Podcasts

This Station acts similar to a Smart Playlist. It plays the most recent 2 episodes of all your subscribed audio podcasts. The next episode plays automatically after you finish the current one. You can manually sort your Library to put your favorite Podcasts up front. I use this Station for my daily commute to work and similar stations for road trips or walks. It allows me to listen to multiple programs hands-free.

Stations will also sync with your Apple TV Podcasts app. You can create Video Stations that make watching your favorite video podcasts easy and hands-free as well.

One of the things I like with the new Podcasts App is the Downloaded Episodes list. You can turn this on in Settings. This makes it easy for me to find episodes that I've downloaded so I can listen to them when I'm in Airplane Mode. It used to be much harder to listen to programs when I was traveling.

My Boyz,

If you frequently drive with no reception, turn on the Downloaded Episodes list. This is under Library, after you tap on Edit. Tap the empty circle to the left of the list to toggle on the purple checkmark. Next tap Done.

Now you'll see Downloaded Episodes listed with Shows and Episodes. This will let you see all of the episodes you've downloaded, so you can listen to them without reception.
