Why can't I get Execute permission?

Hi, sorry for what may be a simple question, but I'm very new to Macs.

First let me say I'm working on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.4.8 and I currently have the only account on the machine. I am the sole administrator and the sole account. Yet, when I download some programs, I can't install them. For instance, when I recently downloaded MPlayer, I mounted the DMG file and went to open what seems to me the installer - MPlayer OSX (Universal).pkg - only to have a small icon flash in the dock for a second, then nothing happens. I checked the info for the file, and I only have permission to "Read and Write", and this field is greyed so I cannot change it. The dmg file itself is also "Read and Write", though it is not greyed out. Yet, I still cannot change it because there is no option to execute.

What might be the strangest thing though is that this doesn't happen with all applications. I successfully installed VLC player instead, as well as Firefox and a few others, while a few others have given me the same issues as MPlayer, like an installer from Microsoft to let QT play wmv files (a .mpkg file). The same thing just happened with a bittorrent client I just downloaded - Bits on Wheels. I successfully unzip the archive I downloaded to get 1 and only 1 file - Bits on Wheels.app - and when I go to open it, something flashes in the dock and then nothing. It too is "Read and Write".

Again, sorry for my ignorance, but I've literally been using Macs for about 24 hours, and I've been combing through forums all day with no luck.

The .pkg or .mpkg files are not applications but data files which should be opend by Installer.app (which is in /Applications/Utilities/). So they need no execute permission.

Get Info of the .pkg (or .mpkg) file, and check which application is selected for the "Open with:" popup menu. If anything other than Installer.app is selected, then change it to Installer.app, and push the "Change All..." button so that all .pkg files will be opened by Installer.app.

Hi jgibbons72

Welcome to Apple Discussions!!

You need to click on the disclosure triangle, then on the little padlock alongside the "Owner" to authenticate. But it will do you no good, since as you saw with the "dmg" file, "there is no option to execute". This is never shown in the Finder Info.

It may be that the files you downloaded are not compatible with your Mac, or with 10.4. You said that MPlayer was "Universal", so that should be OK, but make sure the others are also either "Universal" or "Intel".

Also, try copying the .pkg (or .mpkg) out of the .dmg onto your Desktop (or another folder in your Home folder) and see if they will install from there.

Hey guys, thanks for you help so far, I really appreciate it.

However, I followed you steps and I still can't get .mpkg or .pkg files to work. I fiddled with the binary version of MPlayer again and it still wont install, and yes, it's set to open with Installer.app.

The same thing happened with Flip4Mac WMV - I downloaded the .dmg which contained a single .mpkg. When I opened it with installer, it just flashed in the dock for a second then nothing happened. I finally did install it, though I had to use Pacifist to do so.

I'm thinking something might be up with my installer.app - when I open it, nothing happened, and it seems that I can't really open any .mpkg or .pkg files. Is there any difference between these filetypes?

Thanks for all your help again.

OK, let's see what happens when you do it.

Open the Console application from your /Applications/Utilities folder. Get it to show two windows: Console.log and system.log. Leave these open, then double click on the Flip4Mac .mpkg, or any other you have around. See what appears in the log file windows, and post anything here.

Well, I did a Google search for "Unable to load nib file: PagedInstaller, exiting" and found only 4 people in similar situations: 1 had no answer, 1 found some command line workaround by bypassing the installer.app, and 2 found they could only fix the problem by reformatting. I'm actually working on this problem for a friend and I know the second option is beyond him. Plus, this problem makes me suspicious that there might be other undiscovered problems, and I want a pretty flawless operating system anyways. So it looks like I'm probably due for a reformat/install unless anyone has any other ideas.

If it comes to that, does anyone know of any guides on how to do this? I've never done it on a Mac before. Or, would Apple take care of this do you know? The computer is only a few months old. Thanks again.

Your missing file should be at this location: "/Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/PagedIn staller.nib" (or maybe a different language).

Since you have already used Pacifist, I suggest you use this to extract a new copy of the complete Installer.app from your Install disks. It can be found in the BaseSystem.pkg. The current version is 2.1.0—if the version on the Install disk is earlier, I would then download the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC) (149MB), or Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (Intel) (294MB) as appropriate.
If it comes to that, does anyone know of any guides on how to do this?
You could do worse than read this KB article: Mac OS X 10.4: About installation options. But ask again if you're not sure. Apple won't do this for you (for free, at least) but they might guide you through it.
