iPhone 6s on iOS 11 unable to join wifi network

I updated my iPhone 6s to iOS 11 and I can no longer join my WiFi network. I know the password is correct and my modem/router are working properly as I am able to connect on my work iPhone without problem. Same with a few friends I had over.

What I’ve tried:

- soft reset

- forget network and rejoin

- reset network settings

- disabled WiFi networking services

- toggled WiFi assist

- setting custom DNS

I would like to avoid a hard reset and restoring form a backup at any cost as I’ve run into a ton of issues with doing so in the past resulting in losing everything. Any other troubleshooting ideas?

Fixed by simply renaming WIFI network name (Or SSID Name). I tried all of these below. None of these worked for me. Renaming forced other devices to reconnect, but I had no problem reconnecting other devices with new network name as I had only 6 to 8 devices.

My Phone: iPhone 6, iOS 11.2.6

1) Force Restart

2) Wifi Channel change

3) WMM disable

4) Router restart with router being off for 2 mins. Nope.. it didn't work. Tried unplugging power card for both modem and router. That also didn't work.

5) Static IP for my iphone

6) Disabled Wi-Fi Networking

7) Reset Network Settings

8) Forget this Network

9) Removed Share My location devices except current one.

8) Disabled WiFi assist

9) Disabled WPS

10) Enabled IPv6 in Netgear Router

11) Even moved away 5 miles just to make sure different Network gets picked up from LTE and hoped that would flush some WiFi network cache along with LTE cache if any. Realized I didn't have to do this stupid thing of moving away from home as they are not at all related. But, you never know stupid things work some times. 😁

12) Disabled WiFi and Enabled WiFi multiple times.

13) Tried Airplane mode and disabled Airplane mode

14) Tried personal hotspot on another phone to connect from problem phone and see if that would flush cache.. Nope that didn't work either

15) Finally the only thing that worked for me was RENAME THE WiFi Network Name for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ.

My iPhone 6 would prompt with incorrect password after first attempt (when I knew password was correct) after upgrading iOS 11. In addition, anytime I would leave network and come back, it would not auto connect. I would be prompted again with incorrect password at attempted reconnect. Updated iOS 11.2 and still had problems. Reset network settings, toggled wifi location, wifi assist, wifi calling, reset DNS, nothing worked. Reset router with new wifi configuration, nothing.

I prefer not to broadcast my SSID from my router. I finally thought to turn my router SSID broadcast back on and it now connects without issue. However even with this workaround, this is a very annoying bug that needs to be resolved.

Hi, i had the same issue after updating the ios on my iphone 6 plus.

Tried everything, nothing worked. Finally, i changed the wifi password to a simple one like "12345678", it worked immediately. After connecting my phone to the wifi, i changed the wifi password to the original one on the router, then i updated the wifi password on my phone, it worked normally. No other method worked for me except this one.

If you have access to the router, open the wireless security settings in the router and change the wifi password, then connect with the new password, once connected u can reset the wifi password to original one and update it on the phone, this worked for me. However, i'm fed up of iphones due to such issues, planning to switch to android.

I should add a bit more clarity on this - I had an issue with my backup being too big for the space left on my phone after I did a major software update (I think it was when iOS 9 was released). I also think my phone may be a unique situation at this point. I updated to 11.0.1 today and it ended up bricking my phone and I had to factory reset and restore from my backup. That said, wifi is connecting just fine now. Looks like 11.0.1 fixed the issue. Thanks!

Hi, i had the same problem, but i solved it . My iPad couldn't join any network, not my home router, not the hotspot from my android phone. (All wifis were password protected) I did "forget the network", that didn't help. I did "reset network settings", didn't help too. One evening i thought:"hmm, what if i take off password of my phone hotspot and try to connect from iPad. And it just did connect with this password free wifi! I was sooo happy, hope it helps to anyone here, who are reading this right now 🙏

Hi. I’ve been having problems and the only way I got it to connect to WiFi was to add my FaceTime to my Apple ID. So turn it on. Then when it asks you to connect to WiFi. It asks for your Apple ID and then it says connect to WiFi. Luckily I did and my phone actually excepted my WiFi password which was saying incorrect password before.

It still says not connected when handset is first opened. But stays connected. but this is the new iOS problems for certain handset, my iPad has no problems. Worth a try.

I have this problem. Worked for few days then from last night it will not connect on my 5s. iPad is connecting fine I also done all above and keeps saying wrong password even though correct. I’ve also tried manually adding my router details etc and still won connect. iPad is fine. Must be iOS problem on smaller devices like 5s upwards.

No problems with iPad. But relie on my phone for Wi-Fi, so not handset but iOS problem.
